The Super League is the only full-time professional rugby league football club competition operating in the northern hemisphere. Although the majority of the teams playing in the Super League are based in the United Kingdom there has been some involvement from French teams with Paris Saint Germain playing when the Super League was first opened to teams and Treiziste Catalane, also known as the Catalans Dragons who joined to play in the 2006 season. The Super is currently sponsored by engage Mutual Assurance. The Super League first began in March 1996 and the season switched from winter to summer. Every team in the league is supposed to play 27 games over 27 rounds from February to September.

Once the season has finished the top six teams in "the Super" play in the playoffs which finishes in the Grand Final. In recent years it has been a tradition that the winners of the Super League play a game against the winners of the Australasian National Rugby competition in the World Club Challenge. From 2007 it has been ruled that there will be no automatic promotion or relegation from this competition and any new teams will be admitted on a franchise basis with the franchise starting in 2009. Three times over the course of a year the franchises are reviewed to ensure that clubs lower down the group can still be successful.
